Practical Nursing began in the year 1892 at YWCA Brooklyn New York. During the 19th century, practical nursing was considered an inferior, undesirable occupation. Practical nurses during these years were the original home health and visiting nurses. Today, there are about 1,300 practical nursing programs in the US. The PN – Program is designed to provide learning opportunities in settings where students work closely with physicians, registered nurses and other healthcare professionals in the delivery of delegated medical care skills. In addition, it is provided to individuals to meet their basic needs with in the framework of normal growth and development throughout the lifespan.
Most Licensed Practical Nurses provide basic bedside care, take vital signs such as temperature, blood pressure, pulse and respiration. They also prepare and give enemas, monitor catheters, apply dressings, treat bedsores and give alcohol rubs and massages. LPN’s monitor their patients and report adverse reactions to medications or treatments. They collect samples for testing, perform routine laboratory tests, feed patients and record food and fluid intake and output.
Graduates of this program must pass the national licensing exam for practical nurses and achieve licensure to practice nursing as an LPN in the US or Canada. The practical Nursing Program provides a foundation for career mobility as in baccalaureate professional nursing programs.
Employment for LPN’s is expected to grow as fast as average for all occupation through 2014. This is in response to the long-term care needs of an increasing elderly population.
PN Consultant
Lifeline International Health Institute is expanding Globally. As part of its expansion, Lifeline opened her doors to Practical Nursing. To carry out the Mission and Vision of Lifeline, the management hired a US based consultant for the Practical Nursing. Our consultant is a Filipino by heart and an alumna of the Central Philippine University class ’59. She is a nurse by profession and had been a member of different committees and organizations in the United States from 1971-2000. She practiced her career as a nurse in the US in the year 1964. Mrs. Lorna D. Schmidt became the Director of Practical Nursing Program at Rochester Technical College (Formerly Riverland Technical College) in the year 1987.
She had been a member of the National Council of State Boards of Nursing: Bias Sensitivity Review Panel for NCLEX board exam. Her expertise in the field of nursing especially in PN makes us very proud to have her as our consultant for the PN-Program.
During the visit of Ma’am Lorna in our institution, a lot of ideas were shared with us. She was so generous that she shared with us how to make a syllabi and how to develop tests.
The PN-Program of Lifeline was patterned from the US. Our curriculum is US-based. This is one of our advantage compared with other institutions. Our consultant made it sure that once we produce graduates, they will be competent and safe Licensed Practical Nurses.
